Introduction About this page
There are currently 15 different types (known as 'biotypes') of herbicide resistant weeds in Mississippi. The first herbicide resistant weed reported from Mississippi is Common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium) with resistance to imazaquin, and imazethapyr, reported in 1989. Local weed scientists estimate that there are 530 sites and more than 39,100 acres infested with herbicide resistant weeds in Mississippi and they infest corn, cotton, cropland, rice, roadsides, soybean, and turf. The most widespread resistant weed of Mississippi is Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense), which infests an estimated 1001-10000 acres and is found primarily in cotton, and cropland. Tall Waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus (syn. rudis)), with resistance to glyphosate is the most recently discovered (2010) new type of resistant weed in Mississippi.
